The medieval houses of the bustling Corso Umberto are now home to an assortment of charming antique and souvenir shops.
One side of the piazza looks out to sea, whilst the other three offer beautiful facades of historic churches and quaint houses, and a striking chequerboard floor paves the vast open space in between, creating an enchanting visual. In the evening, Piazza IX Aprile is quietly buzzing, with pavement cafes and a laid-back ambience. At the centre of this verdant patch is the remarkable Villa Comunale itself — an elaborate, many-tiered pavilion, built by the eccentric Lady Trevelyan for her many pets.

Below the heights of Taormina lies Taormina Mare — the seaside section of the famous medieval town. The small island just off the beach is well worth a visit; offering guests the chance to explore a small nature reserve in the grounds of a crumbling villa. Built in the 3rd century BC, this architectural wonder is one of the largest remaining in Italy, with a spectatorship during ancient times of up to 5, During these times, the theatre was used to stage gladiatorial fights rather than the meetings and plays of the earlier Greek period.
The immense structure sadly fell into disrepair centuries later, but has now been reopened and showcases rock and classical music performances, as well as hosting the famous Taormina Film Festival. The mesmerising ocean backdrop makes this one of the most impressive stages in all of Italy.
Opening hours: The theatre is open daily from 9am — 7pm, although closes to tourists early on show days. Connected to the beachfront by a narrow causeway that disappears at high tide, Isola Bella is a rocky jumble of an island, topped by a historic villa that is open today for visits. Most visitors stay on the mainland beach, which provides the very best views of the island itself, but there are also several nearby beaches set just around the headland.
Corso Umberto is the vibrant lifeline of Taormina, meandering river-like through the heart of the historic centre. Starting at the 18th-century Porto Messina gateway, the Corso Umberto winds onwards through the historic centre, passing numerous tempting side alleys and dozens of local boutiques. During the day, this bustling route is much calmer, with sedate locals selling their wares, and plenty of cafes providing the chance to enjoy a coffee in calm surroundings.
Things to Do in Taormina
Expect to see glitz and glamour, with the occasional celebrity thrown into the mix. Taormina is big on food, with well over a hundred restaurants, and many of these authentic trattorie where you can enjoy deliciously fresh cuisine. Unlike many of the other nearby resorts, Taormina also boasts a handful of fine dining options for those special occasions, serving fine wines from the island itself.

Fans of The Godfather movies are going to love this one. It makes seeing the real-life locations so much more exciting! Set on a high ridge overlooking the sea, the Greek temples at Agrigento are some of the best preserved in the world. The villa is famous for its intricate mosaics, which depict scenes of Ancient Roman life and are described by UNESCO as the finest mosaics in situ anywhere in the world.
